2 days ago I learned that stocks or shares of Washington Mutual has dropped significantly. My boss who just handed me my paycheck told me not to deposit it in WAMU because it’ll go bankrupt within a week. I didn’t take heed until I told the story to my dad who confirmed it. OH NO!!!! So what am I going to do? I’m going away in 2 months and I need all of those money. My dad told me not to worry since the bank is government-insured for 100K (FDIC-insured). I have less than 10k and for sure the government will reimburse me. But what really worries me is that my money could be tied to the bank when it does go down and I won’t be able to touch it until the government settles everything. I really need my money for my sojourn. So my dad gave me the solution of switching bank. I would have switched to Bank of America long ago but what I didn’t like about BoA is that it charges monthly fee of $5.95 unless I maintain a 1K balance in my account. I can maintain 1k balance but what if I needed the money and it goes below 1k? Then I have to pay the monthly fee…grrr! What a dilemma! I also just recently opened a Certificate of Deposit account in WAMU which offers 4.5% per annum. No wonder they bumped it to 5% just weeks after I did the CD thing because they wanted to attract customers. Unfortunately I can’t bump my rate to 5%. They told me that I need to open another CD account…grrr! According to my dad I should just leave my money in CD until it matures even though the bank will go down. The bank is insured and terminating the account prematurely will just be a huge loss for me.

Oh well this is what being an adult means – getting into the real world!
