In my earlier post, I wrote that my camera, Canon Powershot SD500, suddenly died on me. The problem was the lens won’t go down after turning the camera on. It seemed stuck even switching off the camera. So I brought the camera to the CANON service center here in the Philippines. It was to my dismay that the repair of the camera will cost me around 8k pesos ($110+). I asked them why it would cost that much…they told me that the whole lens of the camera needed to be replaced and they couldn’t just screw the parts in. Basically he was telling me to replace the camera. Nooo! They offered me to trade in my broken unit for P2500 ($50) if I will buy a new camera from them. Well that’s a low value considering this is a Powershot SD500. Only P2500 deduction from the price of a new camera?! I don’t think so.
Well my next plan is to have the camera repaired in the US – maybe they can do something about it still and hopefully the repair won’t cost as much. In addition to this plan, I have decided to buy a new camera to replace this one. Of course I couldn’t just tell my father that I broke his camera – I need something to replace it, right? It’s a good thing that After Thanksgiving Sale is coming up. There will be lots of sale and I can get a good discount on the cameras.
I’m looking to buy another Canon camera. I know Canon is a real good brand if not one of the best. The reasons why my previous Canon camera broke on me were (as the customer representative explained to me): 1.) I accidentally dropped the camera one time. Although it didn’t show any malfunction after the drop, the rep said that something inside got loosen up and in time it exhibited the effect; 2.) constant compression – even having a camera case, keeping the camera inside the bag where it can get compressed has an effect on the wear and tear capacity of the camera.
I consulted my sister who is a photography aficionado what camera model to buy. Among the Canon models, the one that fit my budget and has great features is Canon Powershot 10.0MP Dig
ital ELPH camera. The 10MP features is great for me since we had the 7.1MP before which didn’t give a very satisfactory detail to my shots; it also has Purecolor LCD (better than the LCD before); high ISO, 19 shooting modes, face detection mode…Although I don’t usually care about the other functions of a digital camera (I only just point and shoot), the camera specs for this model is really impressive and can actually let me take good pictures.
I would love to buy the 14.0MP model but it’s too expensive for me already and I think as an amateur photographer, 10MP is adequate.
So now I’ll just research where the best deal is and wait for the after thanksgiving sale to buy my new camera!!! I’ll circle the date!
