Hearing about the fervor over the movie “Twilight”, I decided to read the book first before the movie comes out in the theaters. “Twilight” is part of the Vampire book series written by Stephenie Meyer. There are four books in this Twilight Series: Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn. I’ve only finished reading the first and second books and I’m still in the first few chapters of the third book.

Twilight is the story of Bella Swan, a high school teenager, who moved from sunny Florida to this rainy and gloomy small town called, Forks. Resigned to hating the town and her life there, she was surprised to find a fierce attraction to Edward Cullen. She found a lot of weird things about Edward – how his eyes changes color from butterscotch to black, how he always skip school, his unbelievable speed and strength…Edward at first was intensely hateful towards Bella but gradually his attitude softened and they became a couple. Bella discovered that Edward is a vegetarian vampire – one who doesn’t feed on human blood. Despite this revelation, Bella still loves Edward just the same and she keeps the secret faithfully. However her association with Edward attracted a dangerous enemy to herself – another vampire who would do anything to drink Bella’s blood.

The second book “New Moon” is about the separation of Edward and Bella. Bella was devastated when Edward and his family left Forks and her. She found a friend in Jacob Black who in the middle of the story turned against her too. She later found out that Jacob is a werewolf who protects the land against the vampires. Jacob couldn’t bring himself to be a friend to Bella when she’s so in love with a vampire, their hated enemy. Later in the story, Bella and Edward reunited but a powerful vampire clan gave an ultimatum against Edward – that he turns Bella into a vampire or else they will.

The books are intended for young adult readers but reading it, I think the emotions that Bella had in the book are far mature for a teenager. I found the story dragging. The romance between Bella and Edward is so innocent and light (I guess that’s catering for young adult fans) that it doesn’t give much excitement to the whole book. I think that 70% of the book revolves around Bella’s ruminations and emotions (of course the book is written on a First-person basis) and it gets tiring that if I skip all of those I can still get the gist of the story. Despite bordering on boring, I would still finish reading the whole series.

The movie will be coming out on Nov. 21, 2008. It will feature Kristen Stewart as Bella and Robert Pattinson as Edward. From the movie posters, the actors look promising. Although as I’ve mentioned that I’m not really a fan of the book, I’m still curious how the movie will play out the story. I’m interested to find out how it will portray Edward’s handsomeness and supernatural abilities. One thing I should wish though is hopefully the movie won’t seem dragging as the book.
