I can’t believe I forgot to post this. This is one of my most favorite and successful recipe of my baking career. This is the first recipe I tried to bake after returning to the States a year ago.

Why did I choose this recipe? First, my aunt gave us too much apples from her apple tree. Aside from my dad, nobody in our family eats apple unless it’s sliced and cored. At that time, my dad went back to the Philippines and so we were left with dozen of apples given by my aunt plus the ones my dad bought at Costco which he stored in the refrigerator. Absolutely nobody’s eating it. I felt bad that it’ll just go into waste. So I researched a recipe to use all those apples and came up with allrecipes.com Apple Crumb Pie.

At first I was hesitant to do a pie. I’m not really good with baking with flour. I felt that I won’t be able to do a nice pie crust. So what I did I bought a frozen ready made pie crust in the grocery store for only $4.59 and just worried about making the pie filling. For the pie cover, I was glad that it’s a crumb cover and not those beautiful lattice design pie cover but I would love to create a lattice design one of these days.

Preparing this resulted in a big mess and lots of clean-up after. But I was really satisfied with how it turned out. I did this more than 5 times alaready and every time was a success. My family is a big fan of this dessert. I especially! I can finish this pie in 2 days! So if you’re looking on what to serve for desserts – try the Apple Crumb Pie recipe.

APPLE CRUMB PIE

Ingredients:

  • 1 (9 inch) pie shell
  • 6 cups thinly sliced apples
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional)
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup raisins (optional)
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons butter

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. Place sliced apples in a large bowl. Sprinkle with lemon juice if desired. In a small bowl, mix together white sugar, 2 tablespoons flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Sprinkle mixture over apples. Toss until apples are evenly coated. Stir in raisins and walnuts if desired. Spoon mixture into pastry shell.
  3. In a small bowl mix together 1/2 cup flour and brown sugar. Cut in butter or margarine until mixture is crumbly. Sprinkle mixture over apple filling. Cover top loosely with aluminum foil.
  4. Bake in preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 25 to 30 minutes, until top is golden brown. Cool on a wire rack.

Tips:  You can do without walnuts and raisins because it’s delicious as is. Try doubling the ingredients for the crumb because the measurement for this recipe is a little less than adequate (or maybe I just love the crumb top too much). Line the bottom of your oven with aluminum foil because the filling sauce can seep out and fall on the bottom of the oven. It’s hard to remove when it cools down. Top it with a good vanilla ice cream, you’ll be in pie heaven!!!

Happy baking!:)
