A few days ago I took my written exam for RDA – both written RDA and law and ethics exam. Originally I liked to take both exams on one day however PSI for some reason doesn’t allow it. Law and Ethics exam is only 1 hour and it would save me a trip to do the RDA exam on that day too.

Anyway I scheduled my exam online through psiexams.com. First I check for my records and I entered my control number which is given by the boards. Initially I didn’t have eligibility for the Law and Ethics exam because I think I forgot to mail the Boards my copies of Dental Practice Act and Infection Control certificates. So I diligently called DBC to rectify this problem and they were able to give my eligibility record for Law and Ethics 4 weeks before I take my RDA written exam. I then scheduled Law and Ethics a day before the RDA written exam.

There were no testing centers less than 20 miles from where I live so I chose the nearest venues which are Santa Clara for Law and Ethics exam, and San Francisco for the RDA exam. Fees are 23 and 43 respectively. It is compulsory to arrive 30 minutes before the scheduled exam time because registration can take a while especially if there are lot of people taking the exam. Basically you can’t carry anything with you even a jacket without a pocket. The testing site is warm so jacket or long-sleeved shirts are not needed. They’ll provide you scratch paper, pencil and ear plugs, none of which I used. Leave your bags in the car, just bring your keys and ID. The proctor will provide you a big brown envelope to store your keys and other stuffs which you bring inside to the testing room because they don’t have lockers.

Law and Ethics Exam

I didn’t have a game plan on how to study for the Law and Ethics exam until I decided to research it over the Internet on tips for this exam. It’s a good thing I did that because the exam comprises a lot of stuff. Even though it’s only 1 hour and 60 questions, a thorough knowledge of the law and ethics as implemented and regulated by the Boards is needed.

So where will the questions be coming from? In the PSI handbook, there is an outline for the exam. I looked for the information on the citations provided in different sources:

1. the Business and Penal Code,

2. California Code of Regulations,

3. Penal Code 11166,

4. American Dental Association code of ethics,

5. California Dental Association code of ethics, and

6. Dental Assisting National Boards

I printed all the citations and read through them twice and made notes. This served me well because the exam was very objective in questions and not much into situational problems. I finished in under 30 minutes having reviewed all the questions and my answers twice. I thought I would get my results immediately but when I came to the front, the receptionist told me that the board will mail me my results. The board is actually reviewing the exam so it’ll take 30 days before I get my results. Hopefully I pass.

CA Dental Assisting Exam

The next day I went to Candlestick Point, San Francisco to take my CA Dental Assisting exam. This exam has 155 questions and 3 hours in duration. My exam started at 1030am and as usual I went in the center 30 minutes ahead of time to do the registration first.

I didn’t have any reference books to study for this exam except the review/exam books I borrowed from our city’s public library. And those sample questions in the books are really hard making me worry that the exam will be more difficult than I thought. I just prayed that I will wing it.

As it turned out, it was easier than I anticipated. I couldn’t remember the exam questions because I think they flew from head as soon as I stepped out of the building. I got my exam result immediately after I hit the end button in the computer. Although the test duration was 3 hours, I finished in under 1.5 hours that’s with reviewing all the questions and my answers twice. I don’t want to stay late because my dad who drove was getting hungry. Hahahaha.

God is so good! The exam was easy. Lots of questions about infection control especially on hazardous materials, sterilization, disinfection, waterlines; restorative procedures such as base, sealants, cement; smattering questions on medical emergency eg seizure, candidiasis, smokeless tobacco, endo procedure on paper points, periodontal dressing, ortho wire, ortho molar band remover, tooth and caries identification, nitrous oxide, coronal polishing, etc. There’s no questions on dental office management.

After the exam, the proctor gave me my copy of my test result and informed me that the board will give me my license in 30 days since I’ve already submitted my fingerprinting summon papers at the time when I mailed my RDA exam application forms.

Hopefully the license issue process will be smooth sailing and I can get my license within a month. I’ll keep you posted.

Last week I took the RDA practical exam at UCSF. This is a step towards me becoming a registered dental assistant. So what happens after application? I waited for almost 1 and 1/2 month before I got my practical and written exam instructions in the mail. In the instruction paper, it’ll tell the date, place and type/nature of the exam.

Basically the exam consisted of making a temporary crown on typodont #8 and a temporary filling on 19MO or 31 MOD. The candidate has 1 1/2 hours to finish the exam. I didn’t attend a practical exam review since I have strong background in Dentistry and my work allows me a little bit of practice. But I did rent kits I needed for the exam. Although I can borrow some things from the office, I decided not to risk having missing or incorrect items. Dental Board of California has a list of RDA rental kit companies. I got mine from Dental Education Associates for 100USD. The kit rental averages at 125USD.

The exam location for northern California is at UCSF Dental Building. It was easy to find the building to my relief. My test was scheduled at 2pm and I arrived 20 minutes prior. I still needed to get my rental kit and familiarize myself with the items inside the kit. The rental place is at 2nd floor and the exam room is at 4th floor. It’s best if you arrive 45 minutes before the exam to get your bearing and relax for a few minutes.

When I got my rental kit, I immediately made a putty impression of typodont #8 which was advised by the renters. This actually saved me time because all I needed to do during the exam was make the temporary out of it. At 2pm I went up together with the other examinees and register for the exam. The registration process needed us to present a valid ID that matches our name with the name in the instruction letter. That done I went in the room and was surprised that there are many examinees already seated. I was #80 and I think there were 100 of us who took the exam.

Cellphones were not allowed but small purses are ok. I was toting a big purse with camera and a phone hoping to tour the city after the exam. I decided to leave it with the rental kit company who were ok about it. I didn’t find anything missing when I returned for it.

Before we get to the business, the proctor introduced herself and the other staff members which we can ask for questions or help if we encounter problem during the exam. We mounted our articulator on the bench model and it is important to mount it in such a way you’ll have the proper height for working on it. 15 minutes past 2pm, we started the exam. We took out the untouched typodont #8 and screwed in the prepared #8, which was provided by the examiner. It is strictly prohibited to remove the prepared tooth and work on it separate from the bench mount. Although I saw my neighbor who did that and the proctor just reprimanded her to screw it back.

I initially wanted to finish quickly and go but the rules were we can’t go out even if we finish early. We were told to stay put on our seat. So I took my time making my temporary. I made a satisfactory temporary crown on the first try. I used a gun system acrylic which was provided in the kit. The tooth had wide shoulder margins so it was easy to make the crown without any break in the margins. Before cementing it with IRM, I checked for proximal contact, occlusion, and incisal level. To polish it, I just apply a little bit of vaseline and polish it with the finest grit of finishing disc. I didn’t take the time to find out if the kit had provided a better polishing tools. So it was polish to the best of my ability. I cemented the crown in place with a small amount of IRM and cleared the excess cement from the margins. It was difficult cleaning the excess cement without water (there’s no water in the room) and just relying on alcohol.

For the temporary filling on #19MO, I used a matrix band with wedge. I packed in a very thick mix of IRM. It’s important to have a thick mix because the IRM is very sticky and doesn’t pack well and doesn’t set fast. A thick mix is one that can be rolled into a small pellet/ball. Boy did I waste that IRM powder the kit provided. So I condensed the IRM into the cavity. To pack it easier, dip the condenser on an unmixed IRM powder when packing the IRM – this way the IRM won’t stick to the instrument. IRM sets about 5 minutes or so. I carved a decent anatomy on the tooth and removed the matrix band and wedge when the material has set. I removed any flash or excess IRM on the proximal with the hollenback. I checked for occlusion and remove high spots with a cleoid carver. I check for contact on the proximal with a floss and thank God there’s contact because if there’s not, I need to redo it…which is hard without a drilling bur provided in the kit.

I was able to finish few minutes before the time was up. I was able to put back all my instruments in the kit and clean up my space before the bell dinged. After the exam, the proctor had us all go down through the stairs (no elevators allowed) to 3rd floor to wait for the other proctors to finish their scoring. The grading took about 25-30minutes. The scoring system is a pass or fail. After the proctor checked the exam, we were told to go up again through the stairs and clean up our area. We were handed out orange passes to be able to leave the room. After that I returned to 2nd floor to hand back the kit to the company and grab my things to go home.

It was indicated in the instruction letter that the exam will take 5 hours (process, exam, checking and clean up). However we were done in under 3 hours. We finished at approximately 430pm. I thought I would have energy to tour SFO but I lost interest after the exam. The exam result will be mailed 6 weeks after. It is a pass or fail. If one needs to retake the exam, another application and fee need to be sent out. I’m feeling confident but with a little bit of worry that I did well in the exam. I knew my work was satisfactory. Well I’m going to leave it up to the Lord. So in the meantime I am going to prepare myself for the written exam.

In my attempt to improve my career path, I took on the exam for RDA. A lot of dental offices are hiring registered dental assistants more than a non-registered one. I have never had schooling in dental assisting except I have a background and diploma in Dentistry. My first job in a dental clinic helped me learn a lot about dental assisting. When I left that job and finished my schooling, I returned to the job hunt having difficulty finding one because I was not licensed/registered DA. Though I am blessed with good jobs right now, I decided to get myself licensed just to get that out of the way and so that nobody will question my credibility. Because you see, foreign training/graduate don’t mean a thing here.

California has the most complicated and strictest laws/policies when it comes to professional jobs. A lot of jobs need certification and those certification doesn’t come easy. Further training and classes are needed first before you can apply for examination to certification. And of course money is needed to get that license. But the good thing is with certification, you get a higher income. For an RDA the salary range in the Peninsula Bay Area is at around 18-25/hr.

For RDA, the authority for California RDA and dentists is the Dental Board of California. To be eligible for the RDA examination, here are the criteria:

1. Graduate from a Board-approved RDA educational program of a minimum of 720 hours (approximately 8 months); or
2. Complete at least 15 months of satisfactory (1,560 Hours) paid work experience as a dental assistant with a dentist licensed in one of the states in the United States; or
3. Complete a California Department of Education approved 4-month educational program, and 11 months of work experience with a dentist(s) licensed in one of the states of the United States.

To obtain a license, one must:

1. Graduate from a Board-approved RDA educational program of a minimum of 720 hours (approximately 8 months); or
2. Complete at least 15 months of satisfactory (1,560 Hours) paid work experience as a dental assistant with a dentist licensed in one of the states in the United States; or
3. Complete a California Department of Education approved 4-month educational program, and 11 months of work experience with a dentist(s) licensed in one of the states of the United States. Foreign education and/or experience is not accepted.

I just praise the Lord that the work experience I’ve had in the past made me qualify to sit for the exam. I got the 15 months of work; I took my CPR class with my own initiative; I was licensed for xray and coronal polishing by the prompting of my boss. All of these work together perfectly (me being oblivious) and I’m really thankful to God that I don’t have any problems with taking extra steps before I can take the exam.

I submitted my RDA application form within the filing period of Nov 4-Dec 31 2009. The website RDA application instruction was down for a long time and I was worried that I’m doing my application process wrong. I printed and filled out the form, wrote a cheque for the exam fee, and did the livescan fingerprinting.  I sent them all before the final filing date. It was only the third week of February that I was able to see the RDA application instruction in their website. And I’ve got some missing data which I needed to mail but I still have to asked them about it. I didn’t mail copies of my Infection control and Dental Laws and Ethics certificate and a copy of my CPR card.

The practical exam I’m aiming for was scheduled on Feb 27. By the last week of January there was still no response from them. I tried calling but every time it went to their voicemail. They made a mistake with my payment and I needed to send them a cheque again. So another week passed and 2 weeks before the exam, I finally got their instructions for my practical exam.

Now I was rushing to place an order for the exam rental kit 5 days before the exam. The rental kits were so expensive. Most of them were around 125USD. I got mine from Dental Education Association for 100USD. I could have borrowed from the office but I’d rather not risk having missing instruments or things. Some rental agencies can rent you just the typodont which can save you a lot if you can scrounge the other things from your office. Well I just console myself that all the things I spent on this exam will be tax-deductible.

Yesterday was the RDA practical exam. It was held at UCSF Dental Clinics building. The exam was 1 1/2 hours and another 30-40minutes of checking by the proctor, then it’s time to go home. It’s best if you arrive 45 minutes from the test time to be able to familiarize yourself with the things inside the rental kit. The rental kit agency people were very friendly and helpful. They even watch my purse while I was taking the exam because cellphones are not allowed inside the test site. I’ll post my practical exam experience next time.

The practical exam results will be mailed 6 weeks after the last day of the exam. In the meantime, I scheduled my written exam on the last week of march thru psiexams.com

The RDA forms/instructions can be downloaded here. The fees for the exam are: Application = 20, practical exam = 60, fingerprinting = 51 (plus livescan center service fee),  written exam = 43, law and ethics exam = 23, rental kit = 100.
